Totem Skin
(Still Waters Run Deep)
2013
Staff Rating: Turn this to 6.5 of 11
Genre:
Grindcore, Metal
Sounds Like:
Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis
Totem Skin thrive off dramatic contrast between their highs and lows. The dual vocals are excruciatingly abrasive at their high register making for much drama when they slow things down. The six piece band hailing from Sweden evoke some terrific moments with their dynamic contrasts. Particularly at the lows where they really grind to the gritty bottom sludge of Crowbaresque beauty.

Unfortunately, the high decibels rip thru our skin and become an irritant at times. Some pretty weak production (perhaps by design) really drowns into a dull sound that becomes quite annoying and tiresome on several tracks.  There are two really great cuts, however, in "Atrophy of the Heart" and "Seasons Don't Fear The Reaper, We Can Be Like They Are". Had the album followed these two cuts we would have something very special on our hands. These two tracks define the power of contrast playing of highs/lows. They stick out like a sore thumb through their beauty in painting heartfelt landscapes. So follow us through our weighted average rating system below to aid and save time for the music enthusiast:

Track 1: Kargt Landskap - 3.0
Track 2: Still Waters Run Deep - 4.0
Track 3: The Romans Make... - 2.0
Track 4: Atrophy of the Heart - 9.0 x 1.5
Track 5: At the Forest's Edge - 4.0
Track 6: In the Darkness I Sleep - 3.0
Track 7: Seasons Don't Fear... - 10.0 x 1.5

Average weighted rating = 6.5 (rounded)

We still are very intrigued by Totem Skin and look forward to their future releases. We can only ask that they gleam what they can from tracks 4 and 7 and bottle it. Bottle it and drench us with it on their next release. - 4-5-2014

Standout Tracks: Atrophy of the Heart
