Tontura
(Corrosive Meatbags)
2018
Staff Rating: Crank this to 8.8 of 11
Genre:
Hard rock, Grunge
Sounds Like:
Chevelle, Silverchair
We hear a myriad of influences on Tontura’s debut EP inclusive of some progressive early Chevelle and Tool affection pivoting to the straight-shooting grunge of Silverchair. Steadfast anthemic song structure makes for a very enjoyable 14 minutes. Pinto’s frail and wavering vocals dominate the album. There is a dark struggle within his vocal chords that resonate with our senses. The foursome deliver a very tight and concise EP that we feel just scratches the surface of Portugal native’s potential.

Standout Tracks:
"pH" is a fucking brilliant track. So much contrast and angst. Pinto’s voice sounds like a wounded lamb enraged letting loose upon the world.

Alcohol Pairing:
Passarola IPA from Lisboa Portugal is a stellar IPA. 6.3 ABV Bottle. Hazy gold, small beige head. Fruity aroma, orange jam, some tropical fruits. Flavor is similar, light malt sweet, ends bitter and a little dry.

Lasting Impression:
If you are looking for something fresh that has great production and that early to mid 90s grunge feel give these guys a gander. They creep a bit into progressive metal territory and you can tell that they may branch out into experimental territory on their next full length. We encourage keeping with the wounded lamb vocal effect. Its distinguished and refreshing for those hard rock fans looking for some quality angst. - 3/9/18
