Atomic Mold
(Hybrid Slow Flood)
2018
Staff Rating: Crank this to 9.3 of 11
|    Editor's Pick
Genre:
Stonerrock, Heavy psych rock
Sounds Like:
Glowsun, Kyuss, Sons of Otis
With the plethora of heavy fuzz albums popping up all over the place and sounding eerily similar, we have been in search of something a bit different. The hypnotic fuzz from Italy’s Atomic Mold is exactly what we have been in search of. Hybrid Slow Flood, the bands’ third release fills this need and has seeded itself into our rotation. The foursome throw down an absorbing blend of psychedelic heaviness and old school stoner blues that will entice any fan of this genre. The production is not over polished, it has a homegrown quality about it. Let’s just say its pure unfiltered hazy stoner bliss. There are minimal vocals scattered throughout that are really layered into the background, if you don’t listen intently, they are easily missed.

Released through Electric Valley Records, home to some very fuzzy bands, Hybrid Slow Flood will consume every part of your being, the repetitive nature really hones in on your senses and doesn’t let go. You’ll find yourself cranking this one up, it just sounds tremendous at high decibels. Be cautious, the bass frequency will test your system.

ROTATION RECAP:
Weight of the Heavy – 9 of 11
You can feel the heaviness when cranked … look for this one on vinyl.

Fretwork Prowess – 9.2 of 11
Deep rhythmic tones provide the album with its bluesy fuzz.

Risk of Subwoofer Damage – 9.5 of 11
Crank this one up slowly, the bass work is bottomless.

Deep Frequency Range – 9.8 of 11
The tremendous low bass work range sounds amazing and really steals the show for us.

Overall Album Flow – 9 of 11
It’s an easy album to get lost in as there are no disruptive vocals to break up the heavy flow.

Album Cover Aesthetics – 8.9 of 11
Nice space artwork that enhances the experience.

Production Value – 9.1 of 11
Solid production work here, the album has a monolithic heavy sound.

Standout Track(s)
We love the all-consuming “Woodline,” just sit back and let this track take over the room, its so fucking mesmerizing. The cymbal work is steady and amazing here. The last cut “Yellow Crocodile” has an upbeat Wretch quality, we were expecting some old school John Garcia vocals to show up. We’re assuming if you’re reading this you own Kyuss’ Wretch album.

Alcohol Pairing
Wolf Among Weeds IPA by California’s Golden Road Brewing. This 8.00% (ABV) IPA has a pleasant taste of pine and citrus. Why don’t we recommend a heavy Stout you may ask. The contrast and unique flavors of this brew just feels right with Atomic Mold.

Lasting Impression
Atomic Mold brings various forces of heaviness together on this album. It’s repetitive, thick and bluesy with a lasting appeal that does not tire. The feeling you get when this album is cranked is the icing on the cake for us.
