For those who love their music on the experimental side, take a gander at this latest and third release from Fentress. Consisting of two members, Alex Salinas and Janie Cowan, the two from Texas have released a somewhat haunting, ethereal experience in The Mechanics of Angels. The album is pretty much five tracks of dark ambient experimentation. The one intriguing aspect to the album is it sounds very powerful and ominous when played at high volumes and the headphone experience is impressive as well. It’s a very calming album that will no doubt bring down any stresses that you may encounter during your day.

What are the highlights of the album?

Our favorite cut off the album is the second track, “Delicately Entering Illumine Pictures”. The contrasts of this track are very refreshing and work well together, also, the improved jazz-like percussion towards the end is a bit erratic yet works well within the song.

How is the production value?

The sound is great on this album, these two musicians have honed in on a unique haunting and atmospheric vibe.

Does the album art reflect the music?

It’s an intriguing album cover that drew us in, although we never would have guessed dark ambience.

What adult beverage to enjoy while listening to this album?
Enjoy a glass of Three Philosophers by Ommegang Brewery in NY. This 9.5% ABV Quadruple styled brew is extremely flavorful with a strong and sweet flavor with a sense of fruity aromas. It’s a perfect complement to Fentress.

Final thoughts for The Mechanics of Angels.

This is not an album that we go to on a regular basis, yet there is a place for it in our rotation. It’s amazing that with all the music we listen to, every once in a while nothing sounds right. That’s when this album comes into play, just throw it on and cleanse the palate, it will take you away for a moment. - 6/14/2017
