Black Whole Space Wizard Pt. 1
The Sword, Red Fang
Tuesday, September 20, 2016
Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee this is not your pop country bullshit you’ll find on CMT. What we have here is an impressive EP full of space traveling stoner rock. The trio that is Howling Giant have great chemistry and it shows right from the get-go with "Mothership". If you’re a fan of bands like The Sword or Red Fang, give these guys a shot, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s a 'Name Your Price' download on Bandcamp and the CD is priced at $6.66 (love this).
What are the highlights of this EP?
All four tracks are solid. The first song “Mothership” is a spaced out stoner tune with a Sword-like heaviness towards the end, it’s a great song that is sure to lure you in. The steady flow keeps moving along with “Exodus-Earth,” this track is very fluent with slightly muffled vocals leading the way. The music keeps drifting and building in intensity with spoken word background vocals, sucking you into their vortex. The third song and released single “Dirtmouth” brings us back to earth with its punk styled stoner heaviness. We love the sudden change in tempo and attitude on this track. The closing song “Clouds of Smoke” sounds exactly how you think. It’s spaced out heaviness and trippy vocals become mesmerizing after the first three minutes. When it’s all said and done Howling Giant leave us wanting a bit more.
How is the production value?
The production is very good and strong, each instrument has its place and sounds very clean. Crank this one up a few notches.
How is the vocal performance?
The vocals are one of the draws to this album. Each member lends their vocal talents which really helps elevate the album and creates a sense of distant space.
Does the album art reflect the music?
The comic book space themed artwork by Sue Davies is vivid and portrays the band very well.
What adult beverage to enjoy while listening to this album?
Get a pack of Long Trail Space Juice. This 8.70 (ABV) American Double Imperial IPA and its dark fruity taste is the perfect complement to Howling Giant. Plus, the spaceship artwork on the cans adds to the experience.
What are our final thoughts on Black Whole Space Wizard Pt.1?
These guys seem to be flying under the radar at the moment. If they continue on this pace and release more atmospheric, stoner inspired rock they will start to make a name for themselves. Do not overlook Howling Giant, this EP has wormed its way into our rotation and we plan on keeping them here for a while. - 9/20/2016
