Grab your favorite adult beverage, crank up your sound system and let the progressive fretwork flow through your veins. The third album by Arizona natives Spirit Adrift is about 43 minutes of euphoric, arms-raised-to-the-sky sonic progressive metal. Vocalist Nate Garrett is on top of his game with his clean yet powerful tone that blends flawlessly within the music. The vocals don’t take total control of the album, it’s the perfect balance of vocals and heaviness. As for as the percussion goes, the rhythm section is second to none and the soft touches of synths scattered throughout makes Divided by Darkness one of this years top progressive metal albums.

The first cut “We Will Not Die” sets the tone and its a glorious progressive sound guaranteed to lure you in, we were instantly hooked. The second track “Divided by Darkness” is one of the standouts with its infectious heaviness. The vocals are on point and superb here which keeps the album moving forward. We love the sudden drop to bass at the 3 minute mark… fucking brilliant. “Living Light” is a great tune that is so damn fluid and the backing vocals of Kayla Dixon steal the song. At times the band drifts toward a Pallbearer-like progressive doom which gels perfectly with the faster metal structures. We can go on and on, but words do not do this justice, crank this mother up.

Adult Beverage Pairing
Isle of You by Dragoon Brewing in Arizona. This 8.4% ABV Double IPA has a bit of a citrusy and dry taste. A great compliment to DIvided by Darkness.
