2016
Staff Rating: Crank this to 9.2 of 11

Genre:
Heavy psych rock, Doom
Sounds Like:
Dead Meadow, Sleep
Our Norwegian language is very limited and we apologize if we are wrong, but after further digging we discovered the English translation of the word “sopp” means mushroom. Welcome Steinsopp from Norway with their shroom-soaked and acid tinged psychedelic Self-Titled album. Here is an excerpt about the album from the bands’ own website: “This album is about a dude. A dude, who leaves earth and travel through space in search of whatever. And about some of the messed up stuff he encounters on his way there. Alien women, wormholes, space dragons, mushroom people, interdimensional travel, it has got it all, man. Allright”. Ok, we can get on board with this.

Talk about one hell of a trip, this album will take you on a 37 minute raw, intergalactic drug filled journey of psychedelic doom and acid blues. If you love to get lost in albums like Sleeps’ Holy Mountain and the first couple Dead Meadow albums, than prepare to enjoy this one.

What are the highlights of the album?

All the songs tie into one another very well, meaning they have the same sludgy, stoned vibe. The title track “Steinsopp” seems to stand out with its bluesy rhythm. The percussion is so fucking addicting with its mid-tempo classic bounce. “Oort Cloud” is another trip with the hypnotic, spaced out and echoed guitar work. The 9 plus minute “Quasar” sounds like it can be a bonus track from Holy Mountain and were ok with this, just sit back and take in the psychedelic madness.

How is the vocal performance?
The lead vocals are total echo driven. Sounds like he is singing from a dark, metal well 20 ft. below ground as the vibrations carry up towards the light. You cannot understand a word, but its fine, it feels like another instrument after a while. The band does not deviate from this style of vocals as it’s carried throughout the entire album.

How is the production value?
The production is psychedelic and raw and not over polished. Think of Holy Mountain and Dead Meadows debut album.

What adult beverage to enjoy while listening to this album?
Double Dead Guy Ale. This 9% ABV American strong ale by Rouge Brewery says it all.

Does the album art reflect the music?
Absolutely, this cover art by band member Erik Alm (Trøbbel Design) is dark and creative. We need to seek him out for our Homage to the Artist page.

What are our final thoughts on Steinsopp?
While Steinsopp may feed off the Sleep vibe, we don’t really care. At the end of the day it’s a great psychedelic trip of doom and sludge and that’s all we care about. - 12/15/2016
