Sounds Like:
Queens of the Stoneage
Let’s get the comparisons out of the way, Them Bulls from Italy have that distinct clean rock sound akin to Queens of the Stoneage. At first listen, you will no doubt hear the Josh Homme influence. We must admit, at first we couldn’t really get lost in the album without this comparison hanging over our heads. We knew it was a good record, so we put it aside and came back to it a couple weeks later, sometimes great albums don’t hit us right away. So how does this album fair around here? Let’s dig a little deeper into this one.

What are the highlights of the album?
Track 10, “Just Another Please” is one of our favorite cuts. It’s a smooth flowing song with steady bass work. The track slowly builds over time, but never gets to heavy. “Bandana Carlos” has infectious hooks, the music is reminiscent to some good ole Brant Bjork. The aggressive “Pot Gun” showcases some nice start-stop action along with semi-muffled vocals. The sixth track “Made of Ghosts” at times oddly resembles the sixties song “Spirit In The Sky” by Norman Greenbaum, yet this is a bit more stoner-ish than hippy 60s rock.

How is the production value?
The production is good, each instrument has it’s place and sounds very clean. It should translate well to a live performance.

How is the vocal performance?

The vocals of singer/guitarist Daniele Pollio are clean and upfront, he resembles Josh Homme.

What adult beverage to enjoy while listening to this album?
Founders All Day IPA. This light to medium smooth brew with its lively carbonation is crisp and refreshing with a dry and clean finish.

What are our final thoughts on Them Bulls?
While we enjoy this album tremendously, Them Bulls never stray from their formula. The album features very infectious hooks and rhythms throughout, yet it would be nice if they dabbled in some exploration. Regardless, it’s another solid rock album from Small Stone Records that you can seek your teeth into, so don’t pass this one up. - 9/14/2016
