We Came From Space
(While You Were Away)
2018
Staff Rating: Turn this to 4.6 of 11
Genre:
Progressive rock
Sounds Like:
Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, Styx
The debut album from Pennsylvania's We Came From Space is a hodgepodge of choppy stabs at different progressive styles. Is this a concept album? Perhaps an attempt, but the flow is just painful to get through in one full rotation. A common theme we see from fly by night progressive rock band's is putting significant effort in the album art, but falling woefully short on the vocal prowess.

Core progressive rock music will often feature mesmerizing tight precision-like fretwork with elaborate song-structures that often overshadow sub-par vocals. Where We Came From Space takes a dramatic wrong turn is putting to much spotlight on Hubauer and Buzard's vocals. The harmonies are forced and fretwork somewhat limited. Hubauer is a sensational keyboardist providing the primary shining moments throughout the album.

Lasting Impression:
While we appreciate the energy and brilliant band name While You Were Away is a clunker for the avid progressive rock fan. We suggest giving this one a rotation or two to experience the high level of keyboard work that Hubauer delivers, but ultimately the lack of flow and painful harmonies will sour the listener unfortunately. - 6/13/2018
